Cars that are safe

There are some cars which are made to be safe, like in the movie. The main difference: the actual ones use ultrasonic sensors only for backing up. They use radar, which use light in wavelengths that can't be seen, for other purposes. The rest of the way radar works is basically the same. The biggest problems include having the car not warning the driver that he is passing by a lamppost.

This is a post from Alpha Rex. (I'm posting a lot! The other people should be posting some!)

The wires for the NXT are like telephone jacks, with one difference: the snap-connector on top is to one side, not in the center, to prevent kids from connecting their robots to the telephone line.

Brrriiiiing! Brrriiiiiing!
person: Hello?
NXT: Hello.
person: Who is this?
NXT: Alpha Rex.

Why aren't ultrasonic sensors used on all sides of the cars that have crash avoidance systems? How the people designing the crash avoidance systems decide what kind of sensors to use?

We will try to figure that out when we are at the Volvo dealership, but we think radar can see shapes and will be affected less than ultrasonic sensors by weather and objects like mailboxes. Thank you for your feedback! We appreciate your opinion!
